Above the Rooftops
Some nice feel-good tracks to do whatever to...in a weird state of mind right now, so if this mix doesn't make sense, oh well.
01. American Watercolor Movement - [mp3] Sweet Thursday
02. Tapes 'n Tapes - [mp3] Manitoba
03. The Twilight Sad - [mp3] Last Year's Rain Didn't Fall Quite So Hard
04. Asobi Seksu - [mp3] Mizu Asobi
05. Bibio - [mp3] Above The Rooftops
06. Bonnie "Prince" Billy/Matt Sweeney - [mp3] My Home Is The Sea
07. Eternal Tango - [mp3] Forever Inside Of Me
NOTE: I highly recommend checking out the album Hand Cranked by Bibio. Outstanding record, and I'm surprised more people don't have it on heavy rotation. You can buy it on Mush Records, or have your local record shop order it for you. Here's a quick bio:
Producer Stephen Wilkinson is a self-taught musician from an area in central England often referred to as the Black Country. His love for sound and noise led him to the University of London and the study of Sonic Arts where he discovered experimental electronic acts such as Aphex Twin, Autechre, and most importantly Boards Of Canada. His own musical identity was christened Bibio, in honor of a fly his father had insisted on using during the fishing trips to Wales that were so influential in establishing his love of the sounds of nature. Focusing on location recording using cassettes, a half-broken sampler, dictaphones, and experimental ways of affecting sounds, Bibio has crafted a unequalled style that is as subtle as it is powerful.

Sometimes it's good to just chill out to some moody, atmospheric music.
This mix is inspired by countless sleepless nights, staring into the dark, and letting your mind wander.
01. A.R. Kane - [mp3] Lollita
A.R. Kane was a British dream pop/shoegaze band from East London, England. I love the way the guitars create a dreamy, atmospheric soundscape, that is almost poetic in the way it draws you in. When the song is over, you won't want to stop listening.
02. Air - [mp3] Radian
The French duo that is Air is an obvious choice for a mix such as this. This song comes off of their highly underrated '10 000hz Legend', and is, I think, one of the best tracks on the album. The eerie monk-like chant in the beginning, is a perfect build up to the expertly woven textures and instrumentation that follows. I cannot find a single thing wrong with this track. Check out '10 000hz Legend' if you are an Air fan. Many people overlook the record, and that my friends, is a huge mistake.
03. Sebastien Tellier - [mp3] Le Long De La Riviere Tendre
Another French artist sneaks his way onto the track. This one is a perfect track for an evening summer drive, windows down, the sun slowly setting on the horizon.
04. Claire Voyant - [mp3] He Is Here
Some more excellent dream pop, this time from Claire Voyant, an incredible band from Sacramento, California. Victoria Lloyd's songwriting/vocals flow across the track effortlessly, creating a sad, lonely feel, but with an emotional pull that few artists can pull off so effectively.
05. Boards of Canada - [mp3] roygbiv
Any Boards of Canada song could have fit into this mix, but this particular one holds a special place in my heart. The simple, but effective melodies meld together perfectly with eerie vocal samples, and crunchy drums.
06. Closedown - [mp3] Bumblebee
Some overlooked shoegaze/ambient. Always sad. I'm always surprised when ambient/shoegaze/post-punk fans have never heard of Closedown. Check out 'Nearfield', the album this song came from.
07. Autistic Daughters - [mp3] Richest Woman In The World
From the newly released 'Uneasy Flowers', this Autistic Daughters song lives in a dreamy state of sadness and despair. The song is so full of rich texture, that upon each listen, I hear more and more layers, adding to the feel of this amazing track. Definitely check out 'Uneasy Flowers'. I mean, Pitchfork liked it, that means it's good, right?
08. Laura - [mp3] Cambridge Bypass
The closing track to this mix is a lovely song by Laura, a sublime post-rock group. This track comes from the album 'Radio Swan Is Down', an excellent album full of brilliant instrumentation, and powerful build-ups, with releases that never fail to make the build-up worth the wait.
Well, that was fun. If you like what you hear...head to your local independent record store and buy it!
Undie Time
Occasionally, I'll recommend some good hip-hop to friends/acquaintances and instant disgust is almost always the instant reaction. Now, I don't place the blame entirely on their ignorance (keyword: entirely), because there is a lot of trashy hip-hop flooding the radio/internet (thank you, Myspace).
However, dismissing hip-hop entirely is a poor choice. There's plenty of underground hip-hop out there that is, unfortunately, largely unnoticed by the general public.
This playlist is dedicated to some outstanding hip-hop that needs to be heard. Bust some chills to these jams, and let me know what you think.
